34th International Austrian Winter Symposium
The 34th International Austrian Winter Symposium took place from the 22nd to the 25th of January 2020 in picturesque Zell am See, Austria. The symposium was organized by the Austrian Society of Nuclear Medicine & Molecular Imaging (OGNMB) and was held under the auspices of our this year’s Congress President Ora Israel from Haifa, Israel.
The traditional opening Zell Lecture was given by Richard Zimmermann, an independent consultant in the radiopharmaceutical field. In his impressive talk about “Medical Economics in Nuclear Medicine: Chances & Challenges” he gave an interesting perspective of the expectations in nuclear medicine in the next 10 years from the point of view of investors and industry.
During the main congress, renowned clinical and preclinical experts from various domains of Medicine, Radiopharmacy, Physics and experimental Nuclear Medicine shared their experience with the attendees. The lectures covered the full range of scientific, diagnostic and therapeutic applications of nuclear medicine. Furthermore, a „fireside conference“ was introduced covering the Future of Nuclear Medicine from the viewpoint of nuclear medicine specialists and radiologists.
Our director, Markus Mitterhauser together with Irene Virgolini, head of the University Hospital for Nuclear Medicine in Innsbruck, chaired the free submission session, where young researchers presented their current research. One of this session’s lecturers was Theresa Balber, our Post Doc of program line Applied Translational Research, where she talked about “Multimodal in ovo imaging for PET-tracer development: a feasibility study”.
Another attractive highlight was the evening event on the second congress day. The participants were invited to the Castle Kaprun built in the 12th century, where we enjoyed a delicious dinner together and intensified the social networking.
Overall, the congress was rich in information and especially recent research results, while the informal atmosphere supported active communication and networking. We want to thank the organisers for their efforts and are looking forward to next year’s national symposium which will be from the 21st to the 23rd of January 2021!
