Teatime with Researchers

There are various tools to make science and related topics more approachable to the wider public. In general, science communication formats aim to inform, raise awareness, clarify misconceptions and inspire enthusiasm and excitement.

Marie Niederleithinger, one of our institute’s PhD students, is especially interested in the dialog and discussion with her audience.

Next to her research, she avidly engages herself in science communication and has been involved in a number of projects long before joining the LBI Applied Diagnostics. In March of this year, she launched her latest project “Teatime with Researchers” and she invited her colleague Marie Brandt, senior scientist of our Program Line Imaging Biomarkers, to join her for the very first edition. Together they introduced senior citizens to applications of radioactivity in medicine – with the edition conveniently entitled “A Radiant Future”.

The aim of the teatime at her partner venue, the senior residence “Haus Augarten” in the 2nd district of Vienna, was to engage with senior citizens, who constitute a growing societal group and thus group of electors.

By chance, a former radio technician and a former nurse sat in the audience and shared first-hand expertise and knowledge with everyone, further enriching the event with their insights. As questions had been satisfyingly answered and the teatime was very well received, Marie is planning to further develop it and make it a regular event.
